One of the key aspects about cannabis is that it contains at least 750 compounds, of which some are believed, and others proven, to have important effects on certain people. A good amount of resources are now being poured on clinical and medical research regarding these compounds, with definite emphasis on only a few.
What are these compounds? Given the historical restrictions to access and research the plant, there is still a great deal that is unknown about it. Israel and Canada have invested the most considerable amounts of resources to understand these compounds and their potential benefits and risks in different types of populations.
Amongst the compounds, the two most well-known are CBD, the non psychotropic compound and THC, the psychoactive compound that was isolated in the 1990’s by Israeli scientist Dr Raphael Mechoulam. There are, however, multiple other compounds that you probably have never heard of like THCV, CBN, CBC, CBG and many others. There are in fact, other components to the plant such as Terpenes, which are believed to hold great potential in different ways.
The following tables by the Visual Capitalist summarize some of the hypothesis and knowledge around these cannabinoids and terpenes. The fist one shows the aliments that are believed to be treated by each of the cannabinoids or by the interrelation between them, known as the entourage effect.
The next table shows different terpenes and where they are found elsewhere in nature. Terpenes add the special flavor and aroma to the different strains of cannabis.
Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for at least 5,000 years. There are records describing it as medicinal in the Pen Ts’ao Ching, which is the world’s oldest pharmacopeia. It is also featured in the Hindu Vedas as one of the five sacred plants. The Greeks and Persians also produce records noting the plant’s capability to treat inflammation and pain.
Patients who have also experienced the benefits of the plant on its components have different preferences or needs regarding consumption method.
We expect to keep seeing a lot of resources invested in the design and dosing of different types of solutions for different types of ailments.
